Healthy Journey Starts with Baby Steps: Dirty Dozen

Dear Readers,

To continue the conversation on buying Organic food when on a budget as many of us are, the following information will be invaluable. You may wonder what to buy and where to start because Organic food can be expensive.

Years ago, I discovered the dirty dozen, the 12 top fruits and vegetables with the most pesticide residue. Because of limited funds this list helped me immensely. It enabled me to decide what Organic foods should be a priority. Once I learned, for example, that strawberries were #1 on the list the choice was easy. Buy Organic. Done deal. Decision made. If Organic strawberries are in season and on sale, even better! Remember, the freezer is your friend. Just put them in a freezer bag unwashed as the water will deteriorate the strawberries. I write the date and the word unwashed on a sticker label to remind me and anyone else to wash the strawberries before popping them in the blender for a smoothie!

The 2016 Dirty Dozen List is as follows:

  1. Strawberries
  2. Apples
  3. Nectarines
  4. Peaches
  5. Celery
  6. Grapes
  7. Cherries
  8. Spinach
  9. Tomatoes
  10. Sweet Bell Peppers
  11. Cherry Tomatoes
  12. Cucumbers

Hopefully, this suggestion will help you on your healthy journey!

Remember, baby steps. One step at a time!
